Vertical Form, Fill, and Seal (VFFS) machines are specialist primary packaging systems that form bag-style packages from a flat roll of film. Widely used across the food industry, VFFS machines package a wide range of products, such as crisps, confectionery, frozen foods, baked goods, and various dry food items.
Chances are, you’ve handled a VFFS bag many times—think of a typical bag of crisps.
How VFFS Packaging Works
The VFFS process is a fully automated sequence that includes the following key steps:
- Film Unwinding
The packaging film—often made from polypropylene, polyethylene, or laminated composites—is unwound from a roll and guided into the machine’s forming tube.
- Film Forming
The flat film is shaped into a vertical tube around a forming collar. Using heat to join the edges of the film, a vertical (longitudinal) seal is created.
- Product Feeding
The product is fed into the newly formed film tube. This can be done manually or through an automated system that precisely weighs and delivers the product.
- Bag Forming and Sealing
After the product enters the tube, the machine seals the bottom of the next bag using a horizontal seal. The film is then pulled downward, and another horizontal seal is made above the product—completing the bag.
- Cutting and Discharge
A cutting system, such as a hot knife or cold blade, separates the filled and sealed bag from the film. The finished package is then discharged and ready for further handling.
Benefits of VFFS Machines in Food Packaging
High-Speed Operation
Modern VFFS machines can package products at high speeds, efficiently meeting the needs of large-scale production environments.
Versatility
These machines can accommodate a wide range of food types, sizes, and shapes, making them ideal for many product categories in the food industry.
Flexible Bag Sizes and Styles
VFFS machines can produce bags of various dimensions and styles, such as:
- Pillow bags
- Gusseted bags
- Stand-up pouches
This flexibility ensures the packaging suits both product characteristics and branding requirements.
Enhanced Product Protection
VFFS packaging offers excellent protection against external elements. Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) options can create barriers against oxygen and moisture, preserving freshness and extending shelf life.
Branding and Labelling Integration
Many machines allow for direct integration of printing or labelling, enabling the display of product information, branding, barcodes, or promotional designs on the packaging.
Customisation and Integration
Leading VFFS machine manufacturers provide custom-built solutions tailored to specific food products and operational needs. Options include:
- Compatibility with different films and sustainable materials
- Advanced sealing techniques
- Integration with other packaging systems, such as weighers, metal detectors, case packers, and conveyors
