Packaging Machinery for Different Stages of the Packaging Process

Machine selection is typically influenced by production throughput, pack format, available floor space, operator requirements and the level of automation required across the wider line. The requirements of upstream production equipment, available floor space, pack format, output targets and downstream handling all influence the most appropriate solution.

Primary packaging machinery is used where the product is first enclosed or sealed. This may involve flow wrapping individual products, thermoforming trays from rollstock, sealing pre-formed trays or producing bags directly from film.

Secondary packaging machinery is used once the primary pack has been completed. Typical applications include collating products into shelf-ready packs, wrap-around cases, transit cases or sleeve-wrapped bundles.

End-of-line equipment prepares finished packs for storage and distribution. Depending on throughput and handling requirements, this may involve pallet wrapping systems, robotic palletisers or automated guided vehicles used to move product between production and warehouse environments.

Selecting the Right Packaging System

The most suitable packaging system is rarely determined by the product alone.

A tray sealing system may provide the most efficient solution for one application, while a thermoforming line or flow wrapping system may offer greater flexibility or lower operating costs elsewhere.

For higher throughput environments, standalone machines often form part of a wider integrated line incorporating automatic feeding, product handling, case packing and palletising equipment.

In many projects, the integration between machines has a greater impact on overall line performance than the specification of any single machine.
